Rafer - [żart mode on] mieli miasto budzić, to budzą :) [żart mode of]

Hello.
I am a volunteer on earthquake-report.com. This page provides information about recent earthquakes worldwide, esspecially about the consequences (damage, casualities, tsunamis, etc.). We want to give an as detailed as possible overview about the global activity, but still have some gaps on our world map. One of them is Poland.
We are observing the situation in the mining areas of Poland for about a year. Unfortunately, we did not get a lot of information until now, mainly because of wanting polish skills. (That's why I am writing in English; I read your texts with Google Translator)
While looking for information of today's quake near Polkowice, I found this discussion.
I wanted to ask whether anybody of you is interested to support us with information about mining quakes and their consequences in Poland. You can also write your own reports (in English and maybe Polish). This would 1) show the world your problems with the mining companies (if any) and 2) improve our reporting a lot.
Just contact me, if you are interested. We would appreciate it.
Thank you

I hope this text does not violate the rules of this forum. If yes, I say sorry and I will not write this again. :D
However, stay safe!
Jens

P.S. Our founder is from Belgium, I am German and other volunteers come from Australia, Mexico, France, Nepal, USA, Azerbaijan and Spain. You see, we are very international.

Hi Jens,

welcome to the forum :)
Mining activities are highly visible and we are interested in the subject.

Can you describe the volunteer activities?
These are reports? Need mini seismograph? :)

Hello Jurdziol

No, no seismograph :) We know when a quake happens, only the effects are sometimes difficult to find out :)

Our work on earthquake report has many intentions:
1) We want to give an overview about global seismic activity. Everybody in the world should have a chance to know, what is going on in which region. To know that a moderate quake in China damaged houses, for example. We think that our mainstream media does not give enough attention on this topic. Esspecially here in (central) europe. (10.000 glubal readers per day is our current average)
2) We want to collect as many data as possible, also for scientific reasons. It should be clear which quake is dangerous in which region.
For example: The public opinion is: Strong quakes are dangerous and create damage. And the rest not.
The truth is: Strong quakes can create damage, but can also be harmless, if there are special conditions. And also small quakes can cause damage, as you can see in your region, if there are special conditions. See this database (Google document) The polish quakes are probably not complete.
We've got also a scientist in our team, who is working with this data.
3) Maybe the most important: To help affected people. They (and their family and friends in other regions) can read our realtime updates and see what is going on, a tsunami or not, landslides, aftershocks, potential hazards, etc. In some regions of the world, this is really a problem. They dont get information they want and need from their media.

We are working for free, the donations we collect are 100% for webdesign and intention releated features.

Our last big report is about the quake in March near Polkowice earthquake-report.com/2013/03/19/moderat...nd-on-march-19-2013/ . This report would probably longer, but we had server problems on this day, (the only problems this year!) so not as detailed as usual. (All information are from polish media only)

Not nice to read that your damage is that highly visible. Do you get money from the mining companies to repair the damage?

We hope somebody of you would like to help us. To write and to complete the damage information from Poland. The next big quake could occur sooner than expected (I hope not).

Jens

Jens, here You can see an example of how the mining company takes care of the damages.
There were some cracks in the wall, the old bricks were removed:

And here's how it looks after the repair:

And on the other wall:

A po polsku, powyżej zdjęcia z naprawy szkód górniczych w Bloku Kalidego, przy Fałata. Zdjęcia od podwórka, na 1 zdjęciu widać, że zostały skute spękane cegły, a na 2 zdjęciu efekt po przemurowaniu. 3 zdjęcie pokazuje drugą ścianę, gdzie już ściągnięto rusztowanie. Wiem, że to od podwórka, ale te "placki" na tynku nie wyglądają fajnie. Kopalnia w ramach zadośćuczynienia powinna to lepiej zrobić.

Oh. That's not nice. Hope nobody was hurt. Good that they "repair", but optic  . Can understand that you are not happy with this. When was it caused? Which "quake" was it?
(In our reporting, we do not differentiate between induced and natural quakes, although it is of course inportant to note)
Does it always happen, when the earth is shaking?

The earth is shaking like once in a week, so it's not only one quake that caused these damages. And yes, it doesn't look good after the repair :/
I can also say that it's not easy to get money for the repairs from the mining company. Some people wait for months, and some buildings are unable to bo repaired, like in this case:

wow. really shocking. I know mining damage from my hometown Recklinghausen, but this is really not compareable with yours. (We've got luckily no mining anymore. Mining in germany finally died ironically after a damaging M 4,4 quake 5 years ago)
And it looks like this in all mining areas? Also around Polkowice?

I have no idea how it looks in Polkowice, but Bytom is (unfortunately) well known in Poland for these kind of damages. Of course not all areas look like this but you can find buildings like the one above in many parts of the city.

Ok Thank you for this information. It's sad to hear but I hope your regional economy benefits from this mining activities. Would be at least something positive.

The bigger problem than shocks to lower ground.

In some places, the area fell to 4-10 meters! The built-up areas.
The uninhabited areas is sometimes much worse.

The devastation of infrastructure caused by underground mining activity is a great and common problem in Bytom. For example, our new bypass road built in 2012 with the support of the European Union funds began declining after only a few months of use. The road that cost about 135 million zlotych (over 30 million euros) needs now serious repairs (there are growing bumps on the surface). Unfortunately the coal mining company offers only 250 thousand zlotych (about 60 thousand euros) to cover all the repairs. You cannot do much with so little money and there is no way to get more.
